NFPA 110 Level 1 and Level 2
What it means.
NFPA 110 classifies an emergency power supply system by Level, Type, and Class. Level 1 covers systems where failure could result in loss of human life or serious injury, such as hospitals and life support. Level 2 covers systems where failure is less critical to life, such as property protection or business continuity. Level 1 carries the stricter installation, testing, and maintenance requirements, including the 36-month 4-hour run.
Governing standard
NFPA 110, Standard for Emergency and Standby Power Systems, Chapter 4 (classification) and Chapter 8 (routine maintenance and operational testing). Type is the maximum seconds to restore power (Type 10 is 10 seconds, standard for healthcare). Class is the minimum runtime in hours at full load without refueling.
