Breaker Trip Time Testing
What it means.
Breaker trip time testing measures how quickly a circuit breaker opens under a simulated overload or fault, compared against the manufacturer’s published trip curve. A breaker that trips too slowly, or not at all, can allow a fault to damage equipment or injure personnel before it clears.
Governing standard
Testing methodology commonly follows InterNational Electrical Testing Association (NETA) acceptance and maintenance standards, alongside the electrical safe work practices in NFPA 70E. NFPA 110 requires Level 1 main and feed breakers to be exercised annually.
