Load Bank Testing
What it means.
Load bank testing applies an artificial electrical load to a generator to verify it can produce its rated output under real working conditions, not just idle or start on command. It is the only test that confirms a standby generator will actually carry a building’s full load during an outage, and it is how a site that cannot reach 30% load with building demand meets the NFPA 110 exercise requirement.
Governing standard
NFPA 110 Section 8.4.2 specifies the supplemental annual load bank protocol (30 minutes at 50% of nameplate followed by 60 minutes at 75% in current editions) and Section 8.4.9 the 36-month run for Level 1 systems.
