Fuel Polishing
What it means.
Fuel polishing is the process of circulating diesel fuel through filtration and water-separation equipment to remove water, sludge, and microbial contamination that accumulate in a tank during long-term storage. Standby generators can sit for months between real runs, which gives fuel time to degrade without polishing.
Governing standard
NFPA 110 Section 8.3.7 requires stored fuel to be tested annually to the applicable ASTM standard; ASTM D975 defines the diesel fuel quality being restored.
