Requirements differ between editions of NFPA 110, and the edition that applies is the one adopted by your local authority having jurisdiction. Confirm the adopted edition with your AHJ, accreditor, or insurer before relying on any schedule.

Twelve generator tests a year at intervals of 20 to 40 days, each at least 30 continuous minutes at 30% of nameplate or the manufacturer’s minimum exhaust temperature. Transfer switches tested on the same cycle. A 4-hour test at least once every 36 months.
NFPA 99 Type 1 essential electrical system
Hospitals are Category 1 facilities. The Life Safety and Critical branches must be back within 10 seconds, on separate transfer switches, with the Equipment branch following on a programmed delay.

CMS reviews emergency power records under the 2010 edition of NFPA 110 and the 2012 edition of NFPA 99. Missing or incomplete logs are among the most common citations.
